![]() The Bowen TechniqueWhat is The Bowen Technique? The Bowen Technique is a gentle, relaxing hands-on therapy that aims to relieve tension, reduce pain and increase flexibility of movement. As a remedial therapy The Bowen Technique offers your body the opportunity to restore structural integrity. I use my thumbs and fingers to make a series of precise, rolling type moves over muscle. Light pressure is used and there is no heavy physical manipulation. The Bowen Technique may be performed fully clothed through light clothing or directly on the skin, whichever you prefer. No equipment is needed and The Bowen Technique is usually conducted lying down on a couch. If you find it difficult to lie down on a couch, The Bowen Technique may be conducted sat in a comfortable armchair. During The Bowen Technique session there are a series of short breaks to give your body the opportunity to respond to the moves. The breaks are integral to The Bowen Technique. This gives you an opportunity to relax, helps to bring balance to your body and allows your body to make adjustments. Each Bowen Technique session is individual to you and varies from session to session. It is recommended that initially three sessions are conducted a week apart to allow your body to receive the full benefit of The Bowen Technique. During this time it is advisable that no other physical therapy such as massage or reflexology be mixed with The Bowen Technique. Subsequent appointments may be spaced further apart, and some people use The Bowen Technique to maintain their health and well being. Everybody responds differently to The Bowen Technique and how many sessions you have is up to you. The Bowen Technique was developed by Tom Bowen of Australia who continued to expand his way working until his death in the 1980’s. This intuitive form of bodywork is now known throughout the world. The Bowen Technique is a therapy that everyone may benefit from. It is suitable for adults and children, including newborn babies, pregnant women and the elderly. Some sports people use it to help maintain and increase performance whilst minimising injury.
