The Bowen Technique

What may I expect during a Bowen Technique session?

During your first Bowen Technique session I take a case history from you so that the appointment addresses your specific issues.  This is an opportunity to let me know what is going on for you and any physical traumas your body has been through.  All information given is confidential.  The Bowen Technique session follows this, so you get the full benefits of The Bowen Technique from your first session.  The Bowen Technique appointment generally lasts about 45 minutes.

Subsequent Bowen Technique appointments may last 45 minutes but may also be shorter.  We spend a short time reviewing your previous Bowen Technique session before moving onto current issues that may be affecting your health.

I use my thumbs and fingers to make a series of precise, rolling type moves over specific muscles.  Light pressure is used and there is no heavy physical manipulation.  During The Bowen Technique session there are a series of short breaks to give your body the opportunity to respond to the moves.  The breaks are integral to The Bowen Technique.  This gives you an opportunity to relax, helps to bring balance to your body and allows your body to make adjustments.

The Bowen Technique is conducted either fully clothed through light clothing or directly on the skin (whichever you prefer) and lying down on a couch.  If you find it difficult to lie down on a couch, The Bowen Technique may be conducted sat in a comfortable armchair.

Each Bowen Technique session is individual to you, and you may feel different things at each session.  The important thing is how you feel after a Bowen Technique session.  Most people feel relaxed, energised and more balanced.  Changes may be noticeable straight away or it may take up to seven days for your body to respond to The Bowen Technique moves.

I always advise plenty of water after The Bowen Technique session, as this helps your body process and let go of patterns that may affect your health and well being.  I also recommend that you briefly walk around every 20 minutes or so to keep the moves flowing as this enables the lymphatic system to work more efficiently.

People often ask how often they should come for a Bowen Technique session.  Each therapy is individual to you and it is up to you to decide.  Initially it is recommended that three sessions are conducted approximately a week apart to allow your body to receive the full benefit of The Bowen Technique.  During this time it is advisable that no other physical therapies such as massage or reflexology be mixed with The Bowen Technique.  After the three sessions we review how you feel and decide what to do next.  Subsequent appointments may be spaced further apart, and some people come once every few months for The Bowen Technique to maintain their posture and well being.  Everybody responds differently to The Bowen Technique and how many sessions you have is up to you.
